Campagne St. Georges has had Father-Son
winemakers for more than 5 generations. Since 1987, the vineyards
have been cultivated organically, in accordance with the standards
adopted by the EEC.
The farming methods are meant to be the reflection of true nature.
The vines grow along the rocky hillsides, where the fauna and flora
develop with exuberance, where every living thing finds a little
piece of land in which to thrive. It is in this Languedoc
countryside that Lucien Bourguet created his warm, hearty wines.
Following in his father’s footsteps, André Bourguet carries the
family torch of respect for the tradition of wine making without
chemical processing nor added sulfites.
Cartagène, a traditional aperitif of the Languedoc, was formerly
created by winemakers for their personal consumption. The grapes
are harvested at high maturity (14 to 15.5 Brix) to get the maximum
amount of sugar. They are then laid to macerate in oak barrels for
a full year, with the winery’s own 'eau de vie'. After that long
maceration, the juice is run, grapes are crushed, and
the final wine is carefully assembled and bottled without any
fining or filtering. At no time is SO2 used. The wine’s own alcohol
and sugar content preserve the quality and freshness of the
Cartagène is an excellent aperitif with a very fresh taste. A year
of oak aging imparts a huge, deep aroma. Very fresh, sweet, complex
palate with power and vigor. Stunning, endless aftertaste marked by
intense varietal character.
This is dessert, to drink by itself, but is even
more divine with blue cheese or something chocolate. How about Dr.

I don't know why I stayed away from the dessert wines so long. A sip here and a sip there, the bottle seems to last forever. But our bottle is getting empty, and I've got to order another right away!
Caveat: my stars are very well uninformed.
